What is Sitecom Cloud Security?
Sitecom stands for user-friendly and reliable network solutions for home users. With Sitecom Cloud Security, Sitecom goes one step further and ensures that you can surf the Internet even more safely, not only on your PC, but on all the devices in your home which you use to access the Internet. It does not matter whether you surf the Internet on a laptop, a tablet, a mobile telephone or your television. Thanks to the security that is integrated in the router, all the Internet devices in your home are protected against the dangers of Internet criminality.
Sitecom Cloud Security consists of four elements which, together, make it safer to surf the Internet. These elements are:
- Antimalware
- Antiphishing
- URL blocking
- Ad blocking
What is antimalware?
Malware (an abbreviation of malicious software) is a term used to indicate harmful or unwanted software. The aim of this software is to harm your computer, to affect how your computer works or to violate your privacy. Sitecom Cloud Security offers protection against the following forms of malware when surfing the Internet:
- Computer viruses – infect files with the aim of causing damage
- Spyware – sends the user’s private details to third parties
- Rootkits – give cyber criminals access to the user’s computer
- Adware – infects the user’s computer with advertising software, usually in the form of pop-ups
What is URL blocking?
After activation, the URL blocker automatically displays a warning if you are about to access a website which contains malware or, in other words, malicious software. This will prevent your computer or other devices which are connected to the network from becoming infected. As the user, you can still decide whether you wish to access the website, but you are strongly advised not to do so.
What is antiphising?
Phishing is a dangerous form of Internet fraud which involves people being cheated out of money. Users are tricked into giving away their personal details via fake e-mails and websites. The fraudsters “fish” for your information by tempting you to access fake (bank) websites in the hope that you will enter your personal information, such as your login details for your bank account, your credit card number or your social security number. Sitecom Cloud Security offers protection against phishing and ensures that you are warned whenever you are about to access a fake website.
What is ad blocking?
Many websites display advertisements in the form of banners and many Internet users find this annoying. Sitecom Cloud Security makes it possible to automatically block banners, so that the user only sees the website’s content. An additional advantage is that the website is then also downloaded much more quickly.
How does Sitecom Cloud Security work?
As you would expect from a Sitecom product, Sitecom Cloud Security is very easy to install. You activate the security in your router with just one click of your mouse. That is how simple it is to protect the devices in your home so that you can safely surf the Internet.
Once you have activated Sitecom Cloud Security, your router will work together with Sitecom’s powerful servers, which are located in various locations throughout the Internet. Harmful websites and unwanted advertisements will be recognized by our servers and blocked by the router. You will also be protected against downloading files which contain viruses, as well as against fraudulent websites which try to trick you into giving them your personal details.
Must I install software in order to be able to use Sitecom Cloud Security?
The advantage of Sitecom Cloud Security is that you do not require any special software to protect yourself. The software runs on Sitecom’s powerful servers and is, therefore, always up to date, which means that you never have to install updates yourself. You are, therefore, always protected against the latest risks. Since the servers provide the protection, the speed with which you surf the Internet is hardly affected.
Does Sitecom Cloud Security mean that I no longer require a virus scanner?
Sitecom Cloud Security has been designed to make surfing the Internet safer. It is additional protection. Since it is integrated in the router, all the devices in your home will be protected and this will help to make it safer to surf the Internet.
It is supplementary to antivirus software, which not only protects you against threats on the Internet, but also has other functionality. For example, a good, up-to-date virus scanner will also allow you to safely download files from, for example, a USB stick and will protect you from other risks on the Internet, such as those found on FTP and P2P networks like Bittorrent.
Sitecom Cloud Security is, therefore, supplementary to your virus scanner. Compare it with your house. A virus scanner ensures that your house is safely locked, whilst Sitecom Cloud Security also locks the garden gate.
How can I get Sitecom Cloud Security?
Sitecom Cloud Security is available with the new X-series 2.0 range of Gigabit routers: the WLR-4000 Wireless Gigabit Router 300N X4, the WLR-5000 Wireless Gigabit Router 300N X5 and the WLR-6000 Wireless Gigabit Router 450N X6. These routers can be recognized by the special Sitecom Cloud Security logo on the box. These routers come with a special coupon which has a code that allows you to protect your home network for free for six months.
How can I extend my Sitecom Cloud Security subscription?
The free subscription is not automatically extended. Once the initial six months have elapsed, you can easily extend the protection for either 6 or 12 months at a reasonable price. You can purchase each of the four elements separately or together in a bundle. Sitecom Cloud Security will remind you once a month how long your subscription is still valid.
What must I do if I have changed my user name and password on the router when registering for Sitecom Cloud Security and have then lost them?
In that case, you must reset the router to the default settings and enter the default user name and password. They can be found on the bottom of the router.
I purchased a new Sitecom router last year. Can I also use Sitecom Cloud Security?
No, because Sitecom Cloud Security is currently only available for the new Gigabit models in the X series 2.0 range. The other models have less memory than the Gigabit models and are, therefore, not yet suitable for Sitecom Cloud Security.
Does Sitecom Cloud Security influence the speed of my browser?
Sitecom Cloud Security may cause a slight delay in the browser speed. If Sitecom Cloud Security is activated, the router sends a request to the Sitecom Cloud when you are about to access a website. An answer is then sent back to the router from the Cloud. These extra actions may lead to a slight delay of a couple of milliseconds.
Does Sitecom Cloud Security register which websites I access?
The aim of Sitecom Cloud Security is to protect your home network against cyber crime on the Internet. The Sitecom Cloud does not register which websites you access. Sitecom states that data will not be saved and used for commercial purposes.
Must I install Sitecom Cloud Security on all the devices in my home?
Sitecom Cloud Security is integrated in the router, so that all the Internet devices in your home are protected. Safe Internet surfing is guaranteed for the following devices, provided they are connected to the home network.
- Computer (desktop PC and laptop)
- iPad/iPod
- Smartphone (iPhone, HTC, Blackberry)
- Game console (Xbox, PS3, Wii, DSI, DSLite, PSP)
- TVs
- Blu-Ray players
- Media players
Sitecom Cloud Security can be deactivated at any time after it has been activated. If you no longer wish to use ad blocking, but still wish to use the antimalware, antiphishing and URL blocking, then you can do just that.
I have activated Sitecom Cloud Security, but my router broke. I have since received a replacement router. Must I re-register for SCS?
Yes, because each router has a unique activation code which cannot be reused after activation. If you have received a replacement router, it will have a new coupon with the activation code.
Must I regularly install Sitecom Cloud Security updates?
Realtime protection is offered. Sitecom Cloud Security is always up-to-date and can react quickly to new threats. There is no need to update Sitecom Cloud Security yourself in order to protect yourself against the latest threats.
What is the Sitecom Cloud?
The Sitecom Cloud is a series of powerful servers which are found in various locations on the Internet. Harmful websites and unwanted advertisements will be recognized by our servers and blocked by the router. You will also be protected against downloading files which contain viruses, as well as against fraudulent websites which try to trick you into giving them your personal details.

Sitecom introduces a unique security initiative against cybercrime: Sitecom Cloud Security |
||||||||||
Rotterdam (the Netherlands), March 2011 - Sitecom presents Sitecom Cloud Security: a new security functionality which is integrated in the Gigabit models of the new Pure E-motion | X-series 2.0 (modem) routers. Sitecom has developed this unique security technology in cooperation with SurfRight, a developer of Smart Security solutions, to protect all the devices in a home network against cybercrime whilst surfing the Internet. The Internet is becoming increasingly more important in people's lives, but, unfortunately, the online dangers are also increasing. A survey amongst 6,000 European consumers shows that, although 97% of the respondents have a virus scanner installed on their computer, 49% of them do not feel fully protected against cybercrime. Also, end users do not only use their notebook or desktop PC to surf the Internet, but also their iPad, smartphone or games console. Sitecom recognizes the need for extra security for Internet users and, therefore, introduces this special initiative.
